Role :  

Responsible for the development of the nation’s timber, tobacco and kenaf industries.

   
Functions :  
  • Formulating policies, strategies and programmes of the nation’s timber, tobacco and kenaf industries.
  • Safeguarding Malaysia’s interests in international/regional discussions and negotiations related to timber, tobacco and kenaf sectors.
  • Participating in international agreement negotiations pertaining to forestry and timber industries such as European Union-Forest, Law, Enforcement, Government and Trade (EU-FLEGT), World Trade Organisation (WTO), Close Economic Relationship (CER) and ASEAN Joint Promotion Scheme.
  • Supervising the general administrative matters and activities of the Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB), National Tobacco Board, Malaysian Timber Council (MTC) Malaysia Timber Certification Council (MTCC) and Malaysian Furniture Promotion Council (MFPC).
  • Monitoring and evaluating issues pertaining to incentives, taxation, cess, levy, import and export quotas, product permits as well as supply of raw materials of timber and tobacco sectors.
  • Managing the implementation of forest plantation programmes.
  • Managing the Malaysian Timber Development Fund.
  • Supervising and coordinating the implementation of tobacco and kenaf productivity enhancement programmes outlined by the Cabinet Committee on Increasing the Income of Smallholders.
  • Supervising and coordinating of the implementation of efforts in strengthening the existing markets as well as exploring new markets for timber and kenaf.
