Role :  

Responsible for the exploration of new markets as well as regional, bilateral and multilateral trade activities of plantation commodities.

   
Functions :  
  • Participating in various negotiations related to commodities in the World Trade Organization (WTO) such as Agricultural Committee, Market Access Committee, Trade and Environment Committee, Investment Committee and Trade Policy Review.
  • Coordinating and monitoring the activities undertaken by the Common Fund for Commodities (CFC).
  • Monitoring and coordinating the preparation of reports on current issues affecting the commodity sector.
  • Formulating regional policies, positions and approaches pertaining to negotiations on the commodity sector, including economic and trade developments within ASEAN.
  • Monitoring the export performance of commodity goods under the Common Effective Preferential Tariff-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CEPT-AFTA) concession scheme.
  • Coordinating the Ministry's position on the ASEAN Economic Committee (AEC) and providing relevant input for the implementation of the ASEAN Charter
  • Analysing strategic data and interest of the commodity sector in the Asia Pacific
  • Economic Cooperation (APEC) and the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM).
  • Formulating the Ministry's position in bilateral commodity issues.
  • Secretariat to the Joint Committee on Bilateral Cooperations.
  • Preparing Ministry's report on commodities with the aim to protect, discuss and meet at international levels.
  • Evaluating the development of commodity trade at bilateral levels.
  • Coordinating international trade visits and meetings attended by the YB Minister, YB Deputy Minister and the Secretary General.
  • Secretariat for the negotiations in the Malaysia-EU Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade Voluntary Partnership Agreement (FLEGT-VPA).
  • Coordinating the preparation and formulation of Ministry's position for Malaysia's participation in all FTA negotiations.
